A part of my job as the founder of Open Commerce is security. It is something we take incredibly seriously, as we've seen what happens when it fails. Ransomware, stolen data, and DDoS attacks are more common than ever.

The PHP and Node.js security exploits also made headlines on your timeline,  there. And it wasn't an isolated incident. All sorts of attacks, from DDoS to ransomware, are becoming more frequent. It's the paradox of AI: the same technology that makes it great at building a feature in no time also makes it good at finding exploits. It can poke and prod applications and code in no time, and reason through chains of events until it finds a weak point.

For this newsletter, I wanted to share how we address security, and why this is a decent chunk of my day-to-day job. From people to servers, everything needs constant attention.

If you're interested in how we roll out security training for our team, the device monitoring, or any of the other topics above, read the full article or send me a message. I enjoy talking about it and happy to share what we've learned.

What Maxilia learned by slowing down

Maxilia was ready to replatform. Their old all-in-one system had grown impossible to maintain, the team that built it was long gone, and customers kept calling just to ask where their order was.

The plans for a new platform were on the table, and everyone was eager to get started. Then they did something most companies don’t dare to do: they stopped. What came out of that pause surprised even them, including a few problems that no new software would have fixed.

Here’s how taking a step back turned out to be the fastest way forward.

Building with AI: the knowledge I brought with me

Can someone without a technical background build their own tool with AI? Alexandra built an invoice tracker that pulls her invoices straight from the Romanian tax authority. Looking back, she realised how much her years around developers helped: knowing how APIs work, how to handle sensitive data, and when to ask a colleague for help. Spoiler: AI didn’t do it all on its own.
